BSc (Hons), MBBS, FRCA

Dr Morris joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in September 2021, was elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2022, and appointed Chair of the Medical Committee in June 2025.

Ed qualified in Medicine from University College London in 1992 and trained in anaesthesia in the UK and USA before becoming a consultant in Bristol in 2002. He works in both the NHS and in private practice and has a particular interest in anaesthesia for orthopaedic and urological surgery and medical imaging.

In addition to his clinical work, he has undertaken roles in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, medical school admissions, service management, and representation of doctors within his Trust. Since 2016 he has been a tribunal member for the Medical Practitioners’ Tribunal Service – the independent fitness to practise arm of the UK’s General Medical Council.

Ed’s interest in medical regulation and good medical practice extends to professional sport and he is a Non-Executive Director of the Football Medicine and Performance Association (FMPA) and Medical Governance Advisor to the English Premier League.

Executive Director of Finance

Richard Pile joined MPS in May 2021 and was elected to the MPS Council as an executive director in July 2023.

As Finance Director, he is responsible for the leadership of the Finance Division, providing strategic guidance and oversight on MPS’s finance, investments, business information, procurement and facilities.

Richard has over 17 years of financial services experience in a variety of leadership roles including strategic portfolio planning, financial and management reporting, and operational.

Prior to joining MPS, Richard was Chief Financial Officer at Royal Sun Alliance (RSA) Luxembourg – the European arm of RSA Group. He spent 7 years at RSA in various senior finance roles, and prior to this, worked at Hyperion Insurance Group supporting its global expansion as Head of Group Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) and Reporting. Richard started his career at Grant Thornton, where he qualified as an accountant, working within its financial services practice.

BChD, MA, IRMCert, CMI Level 7, FCGDent

Dr Catherine Rutland joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS on 1 January 2026 and also joins the Board of Dental Protection Ltd.

Catherine qualified in dentistry from Leeds in 1992 and spent two and a half years in hospital roles before moving into general dental practice, first as an associate and then as a joint principal for almost twenty years. She also holds a Master’s degree in Medical Ethics and Law from King’s College London and is a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry.

Catherine has held senior roles at Denplan and Simplyhealth for fifteen years, the last six as Clinical Director, where she gained extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, policy development across dentistry and wider healthcare, and governance responsibilities.

She has held policy and governance roles across dentistry, including Director of Policy and Clinical Affairs for the Association of Dental Groups. Catherine is currently Head of Policy at Dentaid, a charity focused on improving access to oral care for vulnerable communities, and serves as a Trustee of the Dentists’ Health Support Trust, which supports dentists facing mental health and addiction challenges.

Her professional interests include ethics, leadership, and improving access to dental care. Outside of work, Catherine enjoys mentoring and coaching, supported by her CMI Level 7 Certificate in Leadership Mentoring and Coaching.

BS (Econ)

Uma Baska joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in August 2025 and and submits herself for formal election by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2026.

Uma is a highly experienced general insurance actuary with over 20 years advising some of the world’s largest insurance companies. Previous roles have included PWC, EY & Zurich Financial Services, where Uma built a successful international career in London, Zurich and Sydney solving commercial, financial and actuarial challenges requiring interactions with demanding boards.

Uma studied economics at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. She continued her actuarial studies with PricewaterhouseCoopers, qualifying under the Australian and UK Institutes of Actuaries.

Her professional experience includes serving as Chief Actuary for Zurich Financial Services Corporates UK, along with holding senior consulting actuary roles throughout a diverse career spanning Australia, the UK, Ireland, and Switzerland. She has since worked largely with Boards in the UK and in Ireland. Her roles have been expansive, advising insurance companies on liabilities, capital and solvency. 

In her role on MPS Council, Uma works closely with the Executive team, bringing particular focus to actuarial and risk matters.

BA MB BChir MA MBA  FRCS FCSHK FHKAM (Surgery)

Dr Fung joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in May 2022 and was elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2022.

Anthony is a consulting private surgeon in Hong Kong. He graduated from the
University of Cambridge and subsequently trained in the UK and the USA. After obtaining specialist status and returning to Hong Kong, he worked in several public and private hospitals, as well as for the University of Hong Kong.

After gaining his MBA in Healthcare, he co-founded several multi-specialty clinics, for which he served as clinical director and currently remains one of the company directors.

Apart from his clinical and management role, Anthony is a lecturer in healthcare management for master programmes at the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has also been a training consultant for the Hospital Authority. His particular interest lies in leadership, people development, and entrepreneurship.

His other educational role is being part of the MPS Risk Prevention Faculty for which he delivers several workshops. He has been accredited in both face-to-face and virtual presentations, as well as in high-fidelity simulation training.

Dr. Fung is also a certified DiSC trainer as well as an Ontological Coach, combining the use of behavioural psychometrics with linguistic and emotional management.

BSc MSc

Sam Blackie joins the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in April 2022 and submits herself for formal election by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2022.

She is a corporate human resources director with over 30 years’ experience, holding a number of senior positions across the retail and financial services sectors including Group People and Corporate Affairs Director at Royal London, the UK’s largest mutual life insurance and pensions company.

Sam has been a trustee of UK and Irish pension schemes, and a Council member of Aberystwyth University. She is currently a Non-Executive Director at British Friendly and a Trustee of the charity Meningitis Now. Through both her executive and non-executive career, Sam has extensive experience of the operation of governance committees such as the Remuneration and Nominations Committee.

Having completed her Master’s in Business Psychology at the University of South Wales, she has a particular interest in leadership development, culture and organisational change.

BSc MB BCH BAO (NUI) LRCS & PI MD MMedSc PhD

Dr Offiah joins the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in April 2022 and submits herself for formal election by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2022.

Gozie is currently a senior lecturer and Director of Curriculum of the undergraduate medical programme at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Clinical Lead for the National Intern Training for the Medical Intern Unit, Health Service Executive (HSE). 

She graduated from University College Dublin with a BSc in Chemistry and subsequently achieved an MB, BCh, BAO (NUI), LRCP/SI honours degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). She then trained and also obtained an MD doctorate in Surgery from RCSI.

With an increasing interest in medical education, Gozie completed and was awarded a Masters in Medical Education in 2008 at Queen’s University Belfast, and has gone on to author the RCSI’s Handbook of Clinical Surgery for Finals and facilitate Medical Protection risk prevention workshops in secondary care.

Dr Offiah is also a member of tEACH, a worldwide organisation with the aim of promoting evidence-based healthcare communication between patients, relatives and healthcare practitioners.

MBBS BSc MBA

Damien Marmion joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in April 2022 and elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2022.

Damien is a qualified doctor with more than 30 years’ experience managing healthcare businesses and building and coaching teams in the UK, Europe and Southeast Asia. He is passionate about healthcare and in particular digital health. Damien is an advisor to a number of businesses and maintains strong international connections.

During his career he has served as Chief Executive at AXA Global Health and Max Bupa Health in India, and as Managing Director of Bupa’s UK insurance business and Hong Kong business. Damien is currently Chair of two companies, Changing Health and Altha Global Treatment.

Damien studied medicine at UCL & Middlesex Hospital School of Medicine and received his MBA from City University, London. He has particular interests in cycling, travel and food, preferably combined in one. Damien is a volunteer and fundraiser for Operation Smile.

Stuart Purdy joined the Council as a non-executive director in December 2020, and submits himself for formal election by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2021.

Stuart is an experienced financial services executive and non-executive director, with a strong commitment to mutual organisations.

In his executive career, Stuart was Product and Investment Director of Aviva Europe, was CEO of Ireland’s largest insurance group, and he led the launch of Aviva’s business in India. His last executive role was as CEO of RSA’s Asia and Middle East Region.

He is chairman of British Friendly and Beverley Building Society, a member of the Scottish Life Supervisory Committee, and he sits on the European Board of Assurant and chairs its Audit and Risk Committee.

Stuart is also Vice-Chair of Police Care UK and Trustee and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of Age UK.

MBChB MBA MMED FC Neurosurg (SA)

David Roytowski joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in October 2019 and was elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2020.

David graduated in medicine from the University of Cape Town. After several years of clinical practice in ophthalmology, urology, general surgery and neurology in South Africa and the UK, he gained an MBA at INSEAD in France and Singapore. Management consulting at Monitor Group preceded specialisation as a Neurosurgeon at the University of Cape Town.

Dr Roytowski is a practicing academic neurosurgeon with a keen interest in pituitary disease, specialising in skull base and endoscopic surgeries. He is a consultant specialist at Tygerberg and Christiaan Barnard Memorial hospitals, a fellow of the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa and an executive member of the Society of Neurosurgeons of South Africa.

Professor Dacre joined MPS Council as President on 1 October, 2018. 

The President is not a director of the board under the terms of the Companies Act, but is elected by the membership and is entitled to, and does, attend Council meetings, participating fully in the discussions. The role of the President is an active one that provides a valuable channel for engagement between members and the Council.

Professor Dacre is a Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist at the Whittington Hospital in north London, and formerly the director of UCL Medical School. She is leading an evaluation of the effects of gender and ethnicity on the career trajectories and performance of women doctors. She was awarded Woman of Achievement in medicine and healthcare in 2012, by Women in the City and was in the inaugural Health Service Journal list of inspirational women in healthcare in 2013.

She has served as President of the Royal College of Physicians since 2014, a role which she will step down from on 26 September 2018.

Executive Director, Operations

Dan Bown is responsible for Operations in MPS including business processes, quality, systems and IT, membership services, office services, case administration and co-ordination of the international business.

Prior to joining MPS Dan worked with Circle Partnership in UK private and NHS hospitals. Previously he worked for 12 years in a variety of Operational and General Management roles with DHL International. He has lived and worked in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Belgium and Germany where he was Global Operations Director for DHL International.

Before starting his commercial career he served with The British Army. He has a degree from Reading University and an MBA from London Business School.

BA FIA

Mike Urmston joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in August 2016 and submits himself for formal election by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in October 2017.

He is an Actuary and Finance Director with wide experience of the Life and Pensions industry. He worked for Aviva plc and many of its predecessor companies for 38 years, where he was a Life Board Director, Chief Actuary and Finance Director of GA Life, CGU Life and finally Norwich Union Life. Most recently, he has supported Aviva plc in the negotiation of the reattribution of its Inherited Estate. He was also a trustee of the Aviva plc pension scheme and a member of the Regulatory Decisions Committee of the Financial Conduct Authority.

Mr Urmston is now Chairman of the Life Companies of the Pheonix Group, Non-Executive Director of Police Mutual Assurance Society, Ageas Insurance Ltd and Ageas Retail Services Ltd and Alternate Chair of Tesco Underwriting. In addition, he is Chair of AIG Life (UK) and is also a member of the Finance Committee for King’s College London.

MA (Oxon)

Martin Thomas joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in September 2017 and was elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in October 2017. He was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Council on 1 April 2019.

He is chairman of BACIT (UK) Limited, and manager of the Syncona Limited portfolio of assets. He was chairman of Lancashire Holdings Limited, the FTSE 250 specialty insurance company, for 10 years, and a partner and board member at Altima Partners. He is a member of the Brexit High Level Advisory Group of the FMLC at the Bank of England, and of the 30% Club.

Mr Thomas has been an official of the Bank of England, where he established the Financial Markets Law Committee, a secondee to the EU Commission, Deputy Chief Executive of the Financial Law Panel and senior counsel to the European Central Bank. He is a trustee of several charities.
