Dr Catherine Rutland joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS on 1 January 2026 and also joins the Board of Dental Protection Ltd.
Catherine qualified in dentistry from Leeds in 1992 and spent two and a half years in hospital roles before moving into general dental practice, first as an associate and then as a joint principal for almost twenty years. She also holds a Master’s degree in Medical Ethics and Law from King’s College London and is a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry.
Catherine has held senior roles at Denplan and Simplyhealth for fifteen years, the last six as Clinical Director, where she gained extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, policy development across dentistry and wider healthcare, and governance responsibilities.
She has held policy and governance roles across dentistry, including Director of Policy and Clinical Affairs for the Association of Dental Groups. Catherine is currently Head of Policy at Dentaid, a charity focused on improving access to oral care for vulnerable communities, and serves as a Trustee of the Dentists’ Health Support Trust, which supports dentists facing mental health and addiction challenges.
Her professional interests include ethics, leadership, and improving access to dental care. Outside of work, Catherine enjoys mentoring and coaching, supported by her CMI Level 7 Certificate in Leadership Mentoring and Coaching.
